When you delete a file, only references to it are removed – the file itself stays on the disk until it’s overwritten. This means some software could still find and retrieve the files if they get access to your hard disk. Fortunately, Recuva can help you in times like this; it can recover the files that have been deleted from your camera’s memory card, USB thumb drive, and your PC’s My Documents folder, Recycle Bin and other locations, and restore them to the destination of your choice.

Recover Files and Photos Using Recuva

Recuva offers a dedicated ‘wizard’ for rescuing lost images, files and folders. This wizard guides you through the recovering process which makes the entire process pleasantly painless.When you first start Recuva, the recovery wizard should start automatically. Select the type of files you are want recover(1), then specify where the photos were deleted from- such as Memory card, USB thumb drive or any location on your PC. Click Next, then Start, Recuva will scan and display all retrievable files(2).

And now, you will see the accidently deleted files from the chosen location , select the ones you want and click the Recover Button, restore them to the destination of your choice.

If your initial Recuva search doesn’t turn up the files you’re looking for, Click Options, Actions and select ‘Deep Scan’ – a slower intensive mode. Click OK and run another scan. This will search the location more thoroughly for your lost files.

We’ve tested Recuva, and we must say this amazing tool live up to its name (as the phonetic name implies), it successfully recovered all the files which were deleted from our USB Thumb drive. Though we’ve not tested but there are many claims that it’s also good at retrieving corrupted files from partially damaged hard drives & external storage mediums.

MyFolders is a handy tool for Windows users that lets you make any folder a permanent part of right-click context menu, thereby making it easier to instantly open folders and copying or moving files to specific destinations on the system.

Add Folder to Right-Click Menu

Once the app get installed, you will see a new entry “MyFolders” within the Windows right-click context menu. To add or remove locations to MyFolders, simply right-click anywhere on the desktop or in a folder, and select ”Add selected/current folder(s)” from Windows context menu. Now that particular folder/destination will appear in the right-click menu under “MyFolders”.

You can also select settings from ‘MyFolders’ context menu, this is where you can add/remove and organize folders.

Copy, Move or Access Items

Select single or multiple items such as shortcuts, files and folders, and then click on “Myfolders”, here you’ll see a new drop down menu for various self-explanatory operations that you can perform on that particular selected item(s). Here is a quick explanation of the operations.

Copy To: Copies all selected files and folders to one of the quick links folders.

Move To: moves files or folders to the target folder.

Go to: Opens the selected folder in Windows Explorer.

Open Command Window in: Opens a command prompt window with the selected folder as the starting path.

Our Verdict :

We tested MyFolders on Windows 7, 32-bit system and we think its much faster than any of old ways of moving items your favorite folders. Instead of opening two Explorer windows or dragging and dropping files and folders, now you can move or copy items just be few clicks. We also think that this tool may be particularly useful, if your Windows Desktop is littered with shortcuts, files and folder, and you need some help to get it organized.

This tiny tool is compatible with all the recent version of Windows OS, including Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, and works in both 32 and 64 bit environments.

Imgur Uploader is a handy tool for sharing photos to people with minimum effort. It’s a free tool for Windows that makes uploading and sharing images quick and easy.

Sharing images is pretty simple. This tool adds a useful function to your mouse right-click menu. Just select a single image or highlight multiple images and right-click to open the context menu. Click Send to > Imgur, this open a new window and the selected image start uploading to Imgur web service with no fuss. The program then provides you easy-share-links and several codes that you can use either in emails, IMs, websites, blogs, or message boards.

Our Verdict : We think it’s a great way to save time and sharing images is very easier than any other program. But, the only downside is that it only supports anonymous uploads. The URLs will stay alive so long as someone visits them at least once within a span of six months, otherwise they are automatically deleted. However, this will not be an issue for most users.

You can search for tracks, compile playlists, and tune in what other members are listening to. And, its customizable radio tool offers genre-themed stations.

Everyday, eBay has special discounts from selected sellers on items ranging from clothes to electrical goods, with some offering up to 90 percent off the recommended price.  Get these offers as soon as they are announced by adding this app to your Taskbar.

15. Movie+

Movie+ puts theater times, release dates for movies and DVDs, film reviews, movie ratings from rotten tomatoes and trailers in your Taskbar.

16. Notes

Remember those rush hour situations of opening a text editor to type in bits of information such as phone numbers or things to do ? Pokki’s Notes app is an improvement over such text editors. If you are just looking for a simple note-keeping app, this is the one you are waiting for. Its interface and ease of use, make it easy to write down things really fast.

QRreader Beta lets you read QR codes from Chrome, without needing to your mobile phone. This extension adds a new option ‘Read  QR code from Image’ in Chrome’s right-click context menu. So, if you are browsing the web and spot something, simply right-click a code on a web page and Choose ‘Read  QR code from Image’ to open the link. If the QR code has any URL linked to it, it will be open in a new tab automatically. The extension is compatible with a wide range of online storage services, including Facebook, Flickr, Dropbox, Google Docs, Box.net, Picasa Web Albums, Min.us, Twitpic, and a bunch of other services. Once you install the extension, you will see a new entry “Cloud Save” to your right-click context menu. This new “Cloud Save” entry contains a submenu of several supported cloud services. If you select a service for the first time, Cloud Save will ask you to authorize it with your account.

Uploading an item is super easy. Simply right-click a picture or download link on a webpage, select cloud save and choose the service where you want to upload that file. You can upload documents, spreadsheets, presentations and photos into your personal file space.

We tried Cloud Save, and found it’s really an easy way to share files from a web page but it is slightly restrictive because it is unable to save files to specific folders which would be a problem especially for Dropbox users.

Revo Uninstaller is perhaps the perfect uninstaller, that promise to remove every last vestige of a program with a few clicks of your mouse. It is quicker and thorough than the built-in Windows Uninstaller tool. Once Revo Uninstaller has uninstalled a program, it will give you the option to delete any files and registry entries that have been left behind.

The main screen shows up small icons of the already installed software, you simple double-click on what you need to remove. Revo then lets you select a built-in, safe, moderate or advanced uninstall**.  After the process, you can scan for leftover files or registry items that are specific to the application.

** Built-in mode: this mode is similar to Windows own Add/Remove utility and don’t offer any additional scanning. Safe mode: This is the default mode to use Revo uninstaller. It scans your PC’s registry as well as hard drive for left over files that are safe to delete. Moderate mode: lets you uninstall the software with extended scan of registry and files. Advanced mode: This is the most slowest mode. It perform a deep scan in the registry and files in hard disk, and remove every bit of unwanted items.

Aside from Uninstaller, Revo offers advanced tools and features which are just awesome. Here are some of the things you can do.

Hunter Mode:  To access this, click on the Hunter mode button in the Revo Uninstaller main window. This mode replaces the standard interface with a cross-hair icon which appear near the top top right corner of the screen. Drag this cross-hair icon onto an application window, shortcut or taskbar icon and you can choose to uninstall the program, stop the program from auto running, kill the running process, open the containing folder, take a look at the properties or perform a Google search for the selected item. These features are particularly useful, to get rid of those hard to locate pesky pieces of adware or other programs that plague your computer.

Stop Startup Program: Known as Autorun Manager, this tool will show you all the programs that start on system startup and let you kill or remove any that you don’t want to run. The option found in Tools> Optimization>Auto Run Manager. All you need to do is untick the one you wish to stop.

Erase Complete histories: Revo clears traces of your web activities, document histories from Microsoft Office applications and recent file histories from many default windows application such as Notepad.  All you need to do is to go to Tools> Track Cleaner.

Quick Access to Window: Windows has a lot of useful options for optimization, but with increasing complexity of new versions, some of them have become quite hard to find. Worry no more, you will find a collection of all the essential windows utilities in Tools> optimization> Windows tools.

Irrecoverable delete: Did you know that much of your deleted data can be recovered, if they are not been overwritten. There are programs like Recuva that can pull out those files you deleted. Worry no more. Evidence remover, found in Tools> Tracks Cleaner> Evidence Remover, overwrites all sectors on the disk from which you have recently deleted data, hence ensuring that the deleted data become unrecoverable.

Junk Files Cleaner: This tool let you get rid of all those scattered pieces of useless files left around darkest corners of your computer. To access this tool, go to Tools>Optimization> Junk Files Cleaner. And, the list of junk files that appear in this tool can be modified by going to Options>Junk Files cleaner.  Here you will find options to the specific file extensions that are considered as junk files, and other properties based on which they are selected.

Our Verdict
What we like about Revo Uninstaller is that it goes the extra mile by checking the system for unwanted items that should also be trashed and its free version satisfy our needs pretty well. But we dislike its archaic interface that seems stuck in time when this program was first created, and the pricey $40 tag for its pro version, which  add few extra features like forced uninstallation for stubborn software and support for 64-bit OS .

Yoono provide a set of social managers that lets you post status updates and monitor your friends activities across multiple sites in one spot. It pulls all the various updates across the sites on to a single interface, so you don’t have to go to each individual site to see them.

Sharing you status update is pretty simple. You just type your update message into text box then choose where you want it published. It supports a wide range of social networks including Facebook, MySpace, Linkedin, Twitter and Foursqaure. There is even support for instant messengers, including AIM, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and Google Talk.

Yoono can load as a sidebar in browser (Firefox and Chrome), or a desktop app. There is an iPhone app and a portable version that runs on USB flash drive, enabling you connect with your friend on the go.

We’ve tried the desktop version and the web-based version(through extensions). They have extremely similar interface and features. However, the Web Yoono offer additional tools called widgets and the Desktop Yoono does not. We particularly like Web Notes widget which lets you highlight and clip text, images and video from the page you are viewing with all your social networks at the same time. This supports a variety of media sharing sites including Flickr, Photobucket and Youtube.

Through setting options you can make adjustments, according to your preferences. For example, you can change background color, language preference, text size and settings for pop-up alert system.

Yoono is a must have for those who spends a lot of time on social network. Yoono provide a set of tools which are flexible and easy to use. Best of all, it is available for desktop (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux), iPhone and browsers (Chrome and Firefox).

The goal of Wayback Machine is to preserve the history of the web in a searchable and interactive manner. It record the content of websites for each year of their existence since 1996, providing a fascinating picture of past.

Using Wayback Machine is pretty simple. To use wayback Machine simply type address of a website or webpage in the search filed, and click on “Take Me Back” button. Upon clicking “Take Me Back’” button, you’ll be presented with a timeline and a calendar below it. The Timeline show you volume of grabs that Wayback Machine did each year while calendar allow you to see archived pages for a particular day.  You will notice different size of circles on different dates, which indicate how many times Wayback Machine crawled the website. Larger the circle, more is the number of snapshots or archived version of a website.

Click on any date on the calendar to see what your favorite website looked like that day. Here is Howtogeek on Nov 26, 2006. And, you can switch between different dates via timeline in the upper right corner.

b) If you are just starting your own website or blog, this site will give you inspiration dose by letting you see the evolution of your competitor’s site design and content over the years. Then, you can make changes to your site if things are not working out expected.

Facebook has numerous shortcuts that let you navigate the website without touching a mouse. Here we are sharing great pair of shortcuts for Facebookers who prefer to keep their finger on their keyboard and off their mouse.

Facebook’s keyboard shortcuts vary slightly between browser and operating system. Each use a different ‘modifier key’, which is the first part of shortcut. The modifier key are followed by a command, which is the second part of shortcut.  If you are using Chrome and Windows, the modifier is Alt, while for Firefox, its Alt + Shift. If you use Internet Explorer, you’ll need to press ALT and other shortcut key simultaneously, and then press Enter for the shortcut to work.

If you are on a Mac, you need to add Ctrl+Option to each of the shortcut commands. While using Firefox on Mac, press Function+Ctrl with the different commands.

Here are the modifier keys combination for different browsers :-

Windows
Firefox modifier: Shift + Alt + #(*command)
Chrome modifier: Alt + #
Internet Explorer: Alt + #
Opera modifier: Alt + #
Safari modifier: Alt + #

Mac
Firefox modifier: Control + #
Chrome modifier: Control + Option + #
Safari modifier: Control + Option + #

Pressing the modifier key and the question mark moves your cursor to Facebook’ search Box. Its Alt+? in Chrome and for Firefox its Alt+Shift+M.

Pressing the modifier key with M opens a new Facebook message.

Pressing modifier key with 1 takes you to your news feed.

Pressing modifier key with 2 takes you to your profile page.

Another feature that we like here at Facebook is that Facebook chat support  different sets of smileys and emotions. These little icons can be produced by typing shortcut code into Facebook chat. To use call related keyboard shortcuts, Go to Tools> Options > Advanced Hotkeys and select the option “Enable Keyboard Shortcuts”. Now, you can end a call by pressing Alt+PgUn, hang up by pressing Alt+PgDn and create customized hotkeys by clicking the ‘Change selected Shortcut” button for tasks such as Mute microphone and ignore call.
