Branded Vs. Keyword-Rich Domain Names ? [ Video]

Are you planning to start a website and want to purchase a new domain name  ?  Matt Cuts comes up with  a piece of advice about picking a domain name for your business.

In this video, Matt Cutts explain the various aspects regarding Brands Vs. Keyword-Rich Domains.

What’s in the video ? [ For slow connection and Mobile users]                                                                             Most of the webmaster suggest you to choose a keyword rich domain for better ranking – it means, domains that  include the main keywords related to your niche. For example, If you are going to sell Blackberry Playbook apps on your website, then for succeeding in the search engine choose domains like,, etc.On the other hand, when you see popular websites/blogs such as Techcrunch, ReadWriteWeb, Lifehacker, Twitter and  Facebook – the domain names are not related niche of these websites and they earned a huge success on search engines. These sites clearly shows that succeeding in the search engines isn’t just about a domain. Matt ( and me ) also think that brandable website are preferable over keyword rich domains.

An Alert : If you ask any webmaster, he/she will defiantly suggest you that domain stuffed with keywords will rank much better and listings, without putting any extra efforts. But, the following statement by Matt, is like a nightmare for  the lazy webmasters :

Now if you are still on the fence, let me just give you a bit of color. that we have looked at the rankings and the weights that we give to keyword domains, & some people have complained that we are giving a little too much weight for keywords in domains. So we have been thinking about at adjusting that mix a bit and sort of turning the knob down within the algorithm, so that given 2 different domains it wouldn’t necessarily help you as much to have a domain name with a bunch of keywords in it. – Matt Cutts

So for lazy webmasters, now its time to adjust their SEO strategies and put additional efforts in quality content generation and in link building. In near future, Google may take a big step to lay down spammers and black hat websites.

Though, keyword rich domains work great in Bing and Yahoo, but how many of you cares about it. Do share your views with us ?
