HandyOutliner: Export Bookmarks from PDF Documents


At  this time, the free PDF reader like Foxit and PDFxchange, allow you to add bookmarks in a PDF document but does not offer any option to export them. If you think that Bookmarks don’t need to be limited to a menu in your PDF file, HandyOutliner is a tool to help you.

HandyOutliner is a  small utility that help you to export embedded bookmarks from a PDF/DjVu file. Depending on what you choose to do, you can either modify bookmarks, or export them in a wide range of format such as txt, pdf, djvu and xml.

Playing with Handy is very easy, just drag your PDF document  on the ‘ Target Document’ field, and this smart tool automatically extract and display embedded bookmarks. Then, you can quickly save bookmarks in a separate file. The bookmarks exported from a PDF document will be in a special format called table of content (TOC), shown below.

There is a Adobe Reader plugin called AutoSplit  which also allow modifying, restructuring and exporting of embedded bookmarks. But, it’s not a free plugin and support full version of Adobe reader. You can avoid wasting money by swapping pricey commercial AutoSplit plugin with free HandyOutlier. Yes, it’s a freeware and because it’s a Cross- platform tool so it can run on Windows, Linux and Mac.
